Contribution Of Cameroon Diaspora In Local Development

by

The Africa diaspora came into picture way before the world was hit by the change of the phenomenon called globalization. We are not going to talk about slavery here but it was a significant factor that led into the rise of African diaspora. Poverty, wars, natural disasters, etc. were other factors contributing to the growth in African diaspora. However, the mass migration of Africans to the countries with richer and better conditions have resulted in a greater African diaspora in the American and European countries.

The development of African diaspora has led to an amazing flow of remittances. According to The Global Development Finance Annual Report, 2003, by Newland, approximately, an amount of $100 billion was registered as remittances to developing countries in 2003 itself.

Even though the diaspora is situated far away, they are interested in the development and upliftment of their homeland. The Cameroon diaspora consists of some highly educated individuals, serving various sectors as top professionals, such as scientists, doctors, lawyers, medical practitioners, teachers, engineers, etc. The Cameroonian diaspora feels a strong bond with the land once their ancestors lived on but also believe it’s a land where their successors will eventually move to. This keeps them entwined with the happenings and development of their homeland.

The contribution of Cameroonian diaspora through remittances is helping in development of the country in various socio-economic ways. The Cameroonian diaspora also raises funds through various associations such as Bakossi Cultural and Developmental Association (BACDA), Bali Cultural and Development Association (BCDA), etc. for a number of development projects in their homeland. From building of water catchments, construction of a mortuary, building community library and so on. Though far from their homeland, the Cameroon diaspora has proved time and again that their roots are still strong in their motherland.
